Statement of Support for the Joint Call to Action by ISTH, WFH, and EAHAD

The Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC), Hemophilia subcommittee:

Chair, Takeshi Matsumoto, M.D., Ph.D.

The Japanese Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (JSTH) hereby expresses its full and unequivocal support for the joint call to action, "Critical Juncture in Hemophilia Treatment: Global Organizations Issue Urgent Call to Action," released on May 6, 2025, by the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH), the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), and the European Association for Haemophilia and Allied Disorders (EAHAD).

Innovative therapeutic modalities, including gene therapies for hemophilia, hold transformative potential to fundamentally improve patients' quality of life. The recent trend among pharmaceutical companies to scale back or withdraw from these development programs poses a serious threat to the advancement of next-generation medical innovations and compromises long-term patient access to optimal care.

Under the leadership of our President and the specialized committee, JSTH strongly aligns with the global consensus that the current bottleneck in adopting these therapies stems not from a lack of interest among clinicians or patients, but rather from systemic challenges in healthcare infrastructure, reimbursement pathways, and the ongoing need to verify long-term efficacy and safety.

To ensure that all individuals with hemophilia can benefit from safe, effective, and sustainable medical advancements, robust collaboration is essential among industry partners, regulatory authorities, healthcare professionals, and the patient community. JSTH remains fully committed to working alongside domestic and international organizations to sustain therapeutic innovation and to achieve equitable access to care for all.
